How Container Tracking Works
Carrier APIs
Major shipping lines like Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, and CMA CGM provide real-time tracking APIs that report container movements. Each carrier tracks events like gate-in at the origin terminal, loading onto a vessel, departure, arrival, discharge, and gate-out at the destination.
Event Types
Tracking events fall into two categories: Actual events that have already happened (container was loaded, vessel departed) and Estimated events that are projected based on vessel schedules. Estimated events update frequently as schedules change.
Container Numbers
The first four letters of a container number identify the owner. For example, HLCU = Hapag-Lloyd, MAEU = Maersk, CMAU = CMA CGM. We use this prefix to automatically detect the right carrier for tracking.
DCSA Standard
The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) is standardizing tracking APIs across carriers. This means more consistent data formats and the ability to track containers across multiple carriers on a single shipment.
